Nokia is taking the smartphone battle to Android with the launch of a new handset in a collaboration with Microsoft that represents a last-ditch bid to shape computing’s new frontier.

With Apple and Google’s Android now dominating the smartphone market, the world’s largest phone maker is pinning its hopes of a business turnaround on the success of two models unveiled by chief executive Stephen Elop at the annual Nokia World event in London.

The voice-activated feature on the new iPhone 4S will let anyone use the phone to send e-mails and text messages and make calls even if it is passcode locked, security firm Sophos revealed today and CNET has confirmed.

Try it. Grab a friend’s locked iPhone 4S, press the button and ask Siri to do something. I was able to send a text message, make a call and send an e-mail, all without knowing my friend’s passcode. Another colleague confirmed that she could get an address and a phone number out of the phone and even see the calendar.

Apple customers are not happy after having problems upgrading to the new version of the iPhone’s mobile operating system, iOS 5, on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, Facebook and Apple’s support forums, users reported that their phones and tablets had been wiped — or worse, bricked. So many people were having problems with the update that the upgrading error message, “error 3200,” nabbed a spot as a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
