Wi-Fi only Xoom launching March 27th

It took a while for Motorola Mobility to confirm it, but the Wi-Fi-only Xoom is now official.

On March 27, the tablet will launch in the U.S. for $599, Motorola Mobility announced today. The device will feature the same 10.1-inch display as its 3G-equipped counterpart. It will also come with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, 32GB of onboard storage, and a 1GHz dual-core processor.

This is huge for the people that are looking for a tablet for home use with out needing to sign up with Verizon to get one. Samsung and other manufactures to follow. Staples has a list of tablets that they are planning on carrying in 2011.

So with the launch of the Apple iPad2 and the Android Honeycomb version of the Motorola Xoom, they can finally be compared. Here are some snippets from the article from JR Raphael.

Quick Analysis: Apple’s iPad 2 matches the competition in terms of hardware basics, but it lags behind in features, flexibility, and customization potential.

What I found impressive is the Xoom’s higher resolution display (10.1 inches at 1280-by-800 vs. 9.7 inches at 1024-by-768); support for expanded storage via MicroSD cards; and support for USB connections. For those of you that will buy one of the tablets with connectivity thru a Sprint, AT&T or Verizon, the Xoom is upgradeable to 4G in the near future, while the iPad 2 is 3G forever.

Android’s strongest advantages, though, come via the innovations found in the Honeycomb operating system — innovations that will be present in all Android 3.0 tablets, not just the Xoom. So as other models become available from multiple manufacturers. In addition to creating a far wider spectrum of prices, that’ll present a far larger choice in size and form factor — something Apple’s single iPad can’t offer

With 2010 being a year of the Phones (Android, iPhones, Window Phone) and the introduction of the iPad, technology took a huge leap with the capabilities of these person devices. The introduction of Apple’s iPad sailed through 2010 without much opposition as a worthy competitor from either Android or Windows camp failed to emerge.

However, 2011 will be a different year. Apple is planning on releasing the iPad2. Google has plans for the Honeycomb version of Android for the tablet market. HP has their new operating system to the tablets. So there will be more and more competition in the tablet market.

Google announced the latest upgrade for the mobile OS, call Android Honeycomb, which was launch event in Mountain View, California on February 4, 2011.

With the release of Honeycomb and Motorola’s excellent tablet (Xoom), Cupertino will have some serious catching up to do with their iPad 2. Because with a device like Motorola’s Xoom, you realize just how limited the iPad experience remains.
